About Jonathan Moch

I wrote in one of my novels, "It is better to believe in the impossible than nothing." Doctors told my mom she was incapable of having children; so my very existence is impossible. Being delivered a month late, the tubes in my ears were compromised, causing a loss of hearing. I spent my formative years talking funny and reading lips. In third grade, I wanted to participate in plays and musicals. I was told that would be impossible, being tone-deaf. I taught myself what tones felt like. My personal challenge was to get the lead role in every musical and play I auditioned for. From third grade through college I accomplished that. In high school, I wanted to write novels and screenplays. When I expressed this to my English teaches, they laughed, telling me to drop out and get vocational training. As a sophomore in high school, I had a third-grade reading level. I couldn't pass the grammar proficiency test, but I was great at sports. The only way for my school schedule to work one semester was to be placed in an AP English class. Up to that point, I had never read a novel. When I heard we were going to read To Kill a Mockingbird, I watched the movie instead. Mrs. Waldron discovered this, I was asked to stay after school to listen to her read and then read aloud to her. Her passion for my education helped bring me from a third-grade reading level to a twelfth-grade reading level in one semester. This is when words became important to me. Once enrolled in Jr. College, it was discovered I had a form of dyslexia that was often missed in testing. I got my first job as a personal trainer at seventeen. I found I had a passion for bringing motivation and hope to people. Years later, I would train Lynne Cox one of the world's best long-distance swimmers to swim one mile in the Antarctic. Everyone told her it was impossible, except me. Lynne wrote about our training in her book. During our sessions, she learned about my passion for telling stories. She suggested I take my own advice and write. Two years later, another client would finally get me to do just that. The novel was reviewed in OC Live Magazine, stating "Jonathan Moch hits it out of the park with this sci-fi thriller that can be compared to the likes of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings." After this review, Jack Gilardi at ICM brought me into his office, helping me to begin my screenwriting journey. I wrote, directed, and produced my first feature film, Never Alone. I went on to make many award-winning films. In early 2016, my health took a turn for the worst. I was unable to train effectively any longer. My medical condition wiped me out physically, financially, and emotionally. The only thing I had left was the support of my family and friends, as I needed to accomplish yet another impossible task - to survive. I made the decision to go back to Chapman to get my BFA in Creative Writing. I registered in August of 2016; on September 15, 2016, I was in a doctor's office getting test results. The prognosis was that the odds of me living past a few weeks or months were near impossible. I kept going to school despite the doctor's recommendations to be hospitalized. The challenge was to finish what I started despite the odds; I graduated with my BFA in the spring of 2018 and was accepted into the MFA program starting in the fall.
